I don’t know about you, but I think my favorite television at this moment is/are the White House ‘pressers’ run by the lady named Sarah Huckabee Sanders. This is, hands down, the best Presidential Press Secretary I can recall in ages.
That she is as comfortable in the world of politics as she is in her own skin is nearly an understatement. She is 35, married to a fellow named Bryan Sanders, has three children, is the daughter of Mike Huckabee the former Governor of Arkansas and is a founding partner of Second Street Strategies in Little Rock, Ar. She is the third woman ever to hold the office she now has. The first was Dee Dee Meyers in the Clinton era and the second was Dana Perino in the Bush II era.
By birth, she might be thought of a Southern Belle, but if you watch any White House Press Conferences, you can see immediately that she trucks no nonsense, refuses to give in to the howling media dogs, and is very much in control of herself, and therefore of the situation. This reminds me of what today seems to pass for a news person: the news person of today frames his or her question as a statement of fact, and phrases that question/statement as to attempt to catch the Press Secretary off-guard. This has become the audition stage for the next TV news anchor, apparently. And, if this is the breeding ground, we are in for quite a stretch of boring, sub-par news people.
Also, you may’ve noticed that President Trump never has the need to go back and attempt to undo something she has said or permitted to go unchallenged. The following is a quote of her taking on the mainstream media:
“There is a very big difference between making honest mistakes and purposefully misleading the American people. Something that happens regularly. You can’t say — I’m not done. (Shutting down someone trying to speak over her) You can’t say that it’s an honest mistake when you are purposely putting out information that you know to be false or when you’re taking information that hasn’t been validated, that hasn’t been offered any credibility and that has been continually denied by a number of people including people with direct knowledge of an incident. This is something that–I’m speaking about a number of reports that have taken place over the last couple of weeks. I’m simply stating that there should be a certain level of responsibility in that process.”
She earns every penny of the $179,000 she is paid annually, and she has attracted quite the audience for Press Conferences. She refuses to take garbage from the attendees at these conferences; and, she must be doing a great job because she seemingly has very few friends in media circles nor has the President found any need to clarify anything she has said.
If you missed these Press Conferences, I’d encourage you to try to catch one. The clips used by the media tell only that part of the story usually which the media is comfortable bringing back to the public. The nitty gritty is what gets left on the ‘cutting room floor’ by the TV producer trying to get it to fit as brief a moment as is possible. Watch it live, and you’ll see what I’m talking about if I don’t miss my guess.
