“Dreamers” – Tough Call?

“Dreamers” are children who entered our country with their parents who entered illegally.  The big question now is should we force those now young adults, to leave our country and come back only through the proper channels under the rules that all other legal immigrants have been required to observe.  There is a moral/emotional case, certainly, and there is a legal case, obviously.  This is largely in President Trump’s lap today and can be seen as a gift that keeps on giving from former President Obama in a 2012 program.

DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, could be ended this week if President Trump authorizes that.  Trump, at this point, is apparently thinking of ending this program and then allowing the people here under this Act, the “Dreamers”, to remain in this country until their present work permit expires.  DACA was part and parcel of the 2016 election campaign so this is not new “news” to those who would be affected.  Trump called this program “illegal amnesty” during the campaign, so he is rather boxed in as to what is expected from him.

This is a tough call given the emotions that exist, promises made and the impact this would have on the approximate 800,000 people that would be affected.  It was not liked by Republicans and even some Democrats and was/is thought of as an overreach of Executive power.  Business interests, in some cases, have rallied to the defense of this program.

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Ricard Durbin (D-IL) have proposed the ‘bipartisan’ Dream Act of 2017 that would provide a pathway to Green Cards permitting the ‘Dreamers’ opportunities to obtain education, employment and citizenship for those in the country today.

This is but another ‘box’ put into place by those not anxious to make things easy for President Trump.  Time will tell how all this plays out.  I confess I am torn by this issue, and I would probably take the route offered by Graham and Durbin while ending DACA virtually simultaneously.  I would also require special follow-up by authorities on each person who qualifies as a Dreamer, for a certain period of time at least, to assure they are on the straight and narrow and are acting as good citizens.  I would also end the Dream Act so that no more people would qualify for this means of becoming a citizen.
