As the Republican Party works to try to understand how it will handle its candidate for President, Donald Trump in case you’ve forgotten, without totally imploding, the Democrats can hardly believe their good fortune.
They are seeing themselves as being truly blessed when they had almost decided they were destined for the political scrap heap with Hillary as their candidate considering the baggage she drags along behind her beginning with the antics in Arkansas; and the current baggage from Benghazi to easily hackable servers in bathrooms to her philandering husband who would occupy the White House for the second time in his life. The Democrats have difficulty controlling themselves lest they fall to the floor in fits of uncontrollable laughter.
Frankly, unless the Republicans can get out of their own way, Hillary will have been blessed beyond her wildest dreams. This will be better than anything she could’ve hoped for at this stage of her political life.
If the past day or two are any indication, the Republicans will not be able to get out of their own way. Given the current state of disarray amongst Republicans, and given the many competing self-interests within that party, and given the fact that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has the job of Speaker of the House, a job the equivalent of herding cats into a burlap sack, this debacle is only just beginning. On top of all this, there is now the seeming once-every-four-years talk of a third party candidate with Romney threatening to become that person.
Were this not absolutely critical to the fate of our country, it would be a great comedy of the Hole-in-the-Wall gang genre, but this is absolutely critical to our country. We have enemies in this world although most have been behaving themselves recently. We have Russia and China and North Korea for starters. We have a person with no governing experience now the titular head of the Republican party. We have an array of also-rans who maneuver for positions of glory and power whether deserved or not.
We are dangerously close to becoming the poster country demonstrating how not to be a functioning democracy after centuries of having been a functioning democracy. And with that, we also have a bunch of selfish politicians who seemingly do not care because this might be their personal stairway to the stars. The party currently out-of-power is only too eager to capitalize on the travails of the party in power. Too many of our politicians have forgotten they were sent to Washington, D.C. to do the work of keeping you and me safe and prosperous.
When one steps back a bit and looks critically at where we are today, it becomes easy to see how we could simply destroy our viability in short order if we are governed by individual greed and the quest for political power, without the checks and balances we are accustomed to having in place.
Surprising..or is it?
